Elana's Father's Day Giveaway Bonanza: Pizza on the Grill

June 30th, 2009 by

The Bonanza continues!

One thing that dads may love only slightly less than grilling is pizza. On those nights that the family is off kitchen duty and someone poses the question of what to order for dinner, isn’t it usually dad that pipes up with pizza (supported in harmony by the kids)? Well today’s Giveaway takes the two great joys in a father’s life – barbecuing and pizza – and smashes them together.

If dad’s never grilled a pizza, then he shall wait no more.

Today’s Giveaway: Pizza on the Grill by Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer

An art, really, grilling pizza is something everybody should try. According to Bob Blumer (Surreal Gourmet, Glutton for Punishment) and Elizabeth Karmel (Chef of Hill Country restaurant, Manhattan, and creator of www.GirlsattheGrill.com), once you try it, it’s like finding religion. No joke. The unique corrugated, slightly smoky crust grilling produces is an obsession for the two, whose 11-year friendship actually grew out of their pizza-grilling ways. After years of exchanging notes, Blumer and Karmel became the proud authors of Pizza on the Grill, a collection of their pizza grilling wisdom in the form of 100 fire-roasted recipes for pizza and more.

You’ll learn how to make the best dough for grilling, where to put it on what grill, how to ensure it doesn’t burn and an array of off-the-wall, delicious topping combinations that take you through breakfast to brunch, to lunch, and even dessert!

I know you’re intrigued (if not nodding in agreement because you already grill pizza on a regular basis), so send me the correct answer to the following question and stop microwaving what could very well be barbecued: Where does Bob Blumer, the “transplanted Canadian”, currently reside? I have three copies of the book to give away, so hurry up!

Email your answer to blog(@)foodtv(.)ca with Grilling Pizza in the subject line. (Please see contest rules.)

This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Pat B., of Victoria, BC, Sheryl E., of St. Andrews, MB, and Laura K., of Thornhill, ON.

Next on my Father’s Day Bonanza I’m stepping it up a notch! Come back for a chance to receive a package including  Dad’s Awesome Grilling Book, backyard entertainment guide Patio Daddy-O, and a $25.00 certificate for The Perfect Steak Company — yes, a steak company that delivers! The Father’s Day Giveaway Bonanza is running everyday until Saturday on Food For Thought.

Question of the Week: Peanut Butter or Nutella?

June 30th, 2009 by

As I may have mentioned before, I wasn’t born in this country. The other day when my colleagues and I were chatting about our favourite childhood spreadables, I didn’t have much to offer from my early years in communist Russia. The second we got on the subject however, the pleasure lobe of my brain began pulsating with a compelling craving for Nutella

Between the ages of 8 and pretty much last week, my homestead went though a large-size jar (one smaller than the family-size which my parents couldn’t bring themselves to buy despite the value) of Nutella every two weeks. Its proliferation throughout our diet included Nutella on morning toast, Nutella on weekend blintzes, Nutella on white rye for school lunches, Nutella and any fruit/berry (strawberries, apples, bananas), Nutella on Matza, Nutella by the spoon (usually chased by a glass of water – the snack of champions) and the largely discouraged practice of scooping the Nutella out of the jar with a digestive cookie, sometimes double dipping.

Perhaps it’s hard for you to understand, but when as an immigrant child you discover something you only thought possible in dreams – spreadable, nutty chocolate – it captures your little heart for eternity.

That’s why I simply sat there in confusion when a fervent conversation about peanut butter and jelly ripped me out of my chocolate day dream.

Really????? Peanut butter over Nutella? Nuts over chocolate? I know PB+J holds an elemental place in the North American childhood, but if we’re talking sweet spreadables here, how could something that tastes a bit like dirty socks (which I’ve oddly come to love over the years, obviously) beat out a sweet, milky, nutty dollop of chocolate?  (Even those crusty, sugary bits that used to form around the neck of the jar?)

What do you say? Nutella or peanut butter?

Take a Poll and leave your comments below!

Question of the Week is featured Mondays on Food For Thought.
