Do you think that this is unfair?

July 2nd, 2009 by

becky S asked:

My neices and nephews are always calling me up to sell me stuff for their fundraisers. I’m tired of buying popcorn and restaurant coupons (which by the way, I don’t like this particular restaurant) and candles and wrapping paper. I have 2 children who also have to sell stuff but never asked them to purchase anything because I don’t like doing it myself. But since I’ve had to buy stuff from them again this past year, I had my son try to sell them the coffee that they are doing for his baseball team, and neither my sister or my brother bought any because they don’t like coffee!
I hope I made sense on this.

Do business majors really know how to run a business?

July 2nd, 2009 by

Barracuda asked:

I used to be a manager of a restaurant. I worked with a kid that was also in college and was a business major. Our main manager never really did anything, so we practically ran the place.

I never developed a formula, but I’m sure math would’ve perfectly explained the tendencies of our customers and daily sales. Advertising does work. However, it’s only good in spurts. Oversaturating your advertising hurts you more than it helps. People get “immune” to it. Furthermore, there will always be a core of people that will come to your place in any given location. Often times, I found advertising wasn’t worth it. Coupons attracted customers who would only come for the deal and never come back. It’s worth more to invest in a worthwhile location where people can see that you EXIST, than to spend money on ads.

Business majors who think companies need to spend hundreds of millions on advertising are total morons. GM and Chrysler over advertise, as do Coke, Pepsi, McDonald’s and several other corporations. It’s a bragging thing. The fact is, these companies are POORLY RUN and MANAGED. They are just corporate bullies, who are always looking over their shoulder.

The Japanese knew they didn’t have to advertise during the Super Bowl to win over consumers. They let their reputation speak for itself.

You wonder why people think Americans are dumb?

Creamy Potato Soup Recipe

July 2nd, 2009 by

One of America’s favorite comfort foods, potato soup is served everywhere from steakhouses to country diners. Hi, I’m chef Jason Hill of Chef Tips and today we’re making a creamy potato soup recipe that’s dressed up with smoked gouda cheese. If you can’t find smoked gouda, a steakhouse secret to that creamy texture is a processed cheese such as Velveeta. Creamy Potato Cheese Soup 1 tablespoon dried basil 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter 2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese 6 small red …

Ask a Chef with Roger Mooking: Cooking with Noodles

July 2nd, 2009 by

Wendy Miller asks,
“Hi Roger, a quick question about rice noodles and egg noodles: What
sort of dishes can use them in and do you have any tips for sauces to
pair with them, etc. Thanks!

Answer: I love them both
in different applications. The rice noodles are great for a light
summer salad, stir-fry or soup. For a heartier
dish, I will opt for the egg noodles as they are a bit more substantial
in texture as well as flavour. Both noodles come in various shapes,
lengths, and styles. Often to be found dried, both of these noodles
are a great pantry staple item to replace the mid-week pasta meal that
so many people fall back on.

The best part is that these
noodles are neutral enough in flavour that they will work with nearly
any sauce your palate or imagination can venture to try. There is an
infinite variety of dishes that can be made from noodles, but my all-time favourite has to be soup. The next time you make minestrone, break
up some egg noodles in it instead of pasta. I like to blanch and
refresh some thin rice noodles and then add them to a lettuce roll with
my favourite meats and vegetables. Use your imagination and thanks for
the great question.

Elana's Father's Day Giveaway Bonanza: Pizza on the Grill

July 2nd, 2009 by

The Bonanza continues!

One thing that dads may love only slightly less than grilling is pizza. On those nights that the family is off kitchen duty and someone poses the question of what to order for dinner, isn’t it usually dad that pipes up with pizza (supported in harmony by the kids)? Well today’s Giveaway takes the two great joys in a father’s life – barbecuing and pizza – and smashes them together.

If dad’s never grilled a pizza, then he shall wait no more.

Today’s Giveaway: Pizza on the Grill by Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer

An art, really, grilling pizza is something everybody should try. According to Bob Blumer (Surreal Gourmet, Glutton for Punishment) and Elizabeth Karmel (Chef of Hill Country restaurant, Manhattan, and creator of www.GirlsattheGrill.com), once you try it, it’s like finding religion. No joke. The unique corrugated, slightly smoky crust grilling produces is an obsession for the two, whose 11-year friendship actually grew out of their pizza-grilling ways. After years of exchanging notes, Blumer and Karmel became the proud authors of Pizza on the Grill, a collection of their pizza grilling wisdom in the form of 100 fire-roasted recipes for pizza and more.

You’ll learn how to make the best dough for grilling, where to put it on what grill, how to ensure it doesn’t burn and an array of off-the-wall, delicious topping combinations that take you through breakfast to brunch, to lunch, and even dessert!

I know you’re intrigued (if not nodding in agreement because you already grill pizza on a regular basis), so send me the correct answer to the following question and stop microwaving what could very well be barbecued: Where does Bob Blumer, the “transplanted Canadian”, currently reside? I have three copies of the book to give away, so hurry up!

Email your answer to blog(@)foodtv(.)ca with Grilling Pizza in the subject line. (Please see contest rules.)

This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Pat B., of Victoria, BC, Sheryl E., of St. Andrews, MB, and Laura K., of Thornhill, ON.

Next on my Father’s Day Bonanza I’m stepping it up a notch! Come back for a chance to receive a package including  Dad’s Awesome Grilling Book, backyard entertainment guide Patio Daddy-O, and a $25.00 certificate for The Perfect Steak Company — yes, a steak company that delivers! The Father’s Day Giveaway Bonanza is running everyday until Saturday on Food For Thought.
